three black & white drawings

We never did find the owner(s) of the originals of these three drawings. I had hoped to, as the LA Musuem of Contemporary Art wanted to include them in a huge exhibition of fine art in 2011. Alas, their location remains a mystery, and the show has come and gone. Thanks to all who tried to help find them.

I don’t know who owns the original of the bottom illustration, but it was done for The Portfolio of Underground Art, which I edited. It was published in 1982 by Schanes & Schanes, which was the portfolio imprint of Pacific Comics in San Diego. There were 13 plates, each signed and numbered by the artist. Limited-edition of 1,000 portfolios.

The three drawings posted are superb–I’ve never seen such detailed stuff by S Clay Wilson before. Although I’m saddened to learn of his injury, It’s heartening to see the love and friends that are in his life.

S.Clay Wilson, I’m in hopes this finds you well. I would like to thank you for your inspiration. I too purchased a stack of underground comix as a youngster (14 yrs old) in a head shop in Old Town section of Chicago. I’ve spent endless hours drawing with pen and ink. I had dreams of being an illustrator. I wish there was a happy ending to that story but there is not. I still have that stack of 25 cent comix, dog eared an yellowed. I still make reference to Star Eyed Stella, Checkered Demon, and Captain Piss Gums. Get Well my friend I’ve never met. I love the picture of you with my other heros Crumb, Spain, and Paul Mavrides. Your Truly Wes Reynolds

    Hi Lorraine,
My name is Diana and I was given this link because I am on a committee putting together a 50th anniversary of the Berkeley Barb. Mr. Wilson’s artwork was published in the Barb and therefore, his name is on the list of people we hoped to contact. I’m sorry to hear of his accident.
The anniversary is scheduled in August and I have been sending email updates to those who might be interested. There will be two days of events, both musical and academic. You may well know many of the people who will be there. When our website is up and running, it will be a great resource Anyway, the emails explain all this.

Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the images on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. You’re the first. I don’t know what to tell you, but I’ll ask the host at godaddy and see if I can find out.

Im sorry. The June 2013 gallery of drawings does that because I had no idea what I was doing, and posted pictures that were, in some cases, too big. I will try to fix it sometime, when I get someone to help me. Thanks for taking the time to tell me! Cheers, Lorraine
